In the second set, Bopanna and Mergea upped the ante even more and managed to break their Croat-Brazilian opponents twice to wrap the set and the match without much hassle.

Netherlands’ Jean-Julien Rojer, right, watches as Romania’s Horia…

On Sunday the Romanian-Dutch pairing was back at it again, subduing Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea 6-4, 6-3 in the final to become the first team to win the title without dropping a set since round-robin play began in 1986. Tecau would save both break points through to give Rojer-Tecau a 4-2 lead.

The Indo-Romanian pair started in the worst possible fashion, losing the first service game of the match, and never recovered, losing the set 4-6 in 32 minutes. The big difference being the one break chance converted by Rojer-Tecau and their ability to save two of two break chances against their serves. Bopanna and Mergea, who teamed up for the first time in April, were contesting their fifth final together.

Their victory over American twins Bob and Mike Bryan in Saturday’s semi-final had sealed the world number one spot.

The pair won the Madrid and Stuttgart titles and qualified for the Tour Finals, which features the world’s top eight doubles teams, on the last day of the regular season.
