Roma Downey: Hollywood star dedicated to the people of Derry

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has said there is huge pride in Londonderry for local actress and producer Roma Downey who will join Hollywood legends later today in being honoured with her own star on the famous Walk of Fame.

The 56-year-old is preparing for the release next week of period epic “Ben-Hur”, which she and Burnett are executive producing.

The Emmy-nominated actress and producer from Derry, played a leading role in television series Touched By An Angel. Cast members including Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell and Rodrigo Santoro turned up to support her.

“And if there was ever a time more in our world that we needed this message, it´s now, more than ever”. The Bible Continues” and “The Dovekeepers.

The Derry actress told the crowd that soon after arriving in America, she was tipped by TV star and actor Regis Philbin in a NY restaurant while working as a coat clerk, and years later found herself appearing as a guest on Philbin’s TV show.

Downey then became president of “faith” TV production company Lightworkers Media.

“I maybe got a quarter a coat and I met my very first celebrity, (television host) Regis Philbin”.

The actress and producer told the watching crowd that years later when Touched by an Angel was on television she was asked to come onto his talk show and was able to recount the story.

“Hooray for Hollywood and up Derry”, she said.
