Romanian nightclub bosses face manslaughter charges

The owner of Expirat, one of Bucharest’s busiest nightclubs, tucked away in a basement in the popular Old Town, said he was shutting the place down.

AUTHORITIES say another person has died of injuries sustained in the Colectiv nightclub fire and stampede in Bucharest, bringing the death toll to 31.

“People were fainting, they were fainting from the smoke”.

“I apologise and I take responsibility”.

Thoughts and prayers are being sent out to friends and families in Bucharest, Romania, after a fire broke out at a nightclub resulting in the death of twenty-seven people and others injured.

General Prosecutor Tiberiu Nitu announced three associates at the club had been bought in under court warrants on Monday to be heard by the General Prosecution Service as suspects of manslaughter and culpable bodily harm. From 2003 I have put the lives of thousands in danger.

Doctors have told reporters that just under 140 people remain in hospital, more than half of them in a critical condition.

Rockstadt, a big music venue in the central city of Brasov, said in a statement on its Facebook page that it would close for 10 days to replace foam similar to that which caught alight in the Colectiv club, install sprinklers and bring the club up to European standards.

Preliminary forensic tests show the victims died from inhaling noxious gases. “Weekend after weekend and sometimes during the week”.

The La Baza club in the city of Lasi has also apologized for its subpar focus on safety.

Witnesses said the fire began with a fireworks display, set up by a band performing in the venue that night.

“Data and evidence… have shown the fire occurred because the people managing the respective space encouraged and allowed a number of people above the club’s limit in a space that was not endowed with more emergency exits”, prosecutors said.

“We consider we have been ignorant and irresponsible. We were lucky. We don’t want to put anyone’s life in danger”, it said on its Facebook page.

It is still possible that 20 more wounded patients may die, State Secretary of the Interior Ministry Raed Arafat said on Sunday at a meeting of a government task force headed by the prime minister.
