Romero accepts number two status behind De Gea

James represented United’s bitter rivals Manchester City between 2004 and 2006, but there are sure to be many Red Devils fans who will find holes in the 45-year-old’s logic.

Former goalkeeper David James has made the controversial statement that Sergio Romero deserves to be Manchester United’s number one, not David De Gea, as reported by Star Sports.

David de Gea does not feature in Manchester United’s official 2016 calendar, despite signing a contract that could keep him at the club until 2020. “They could not risk having a former player on the fans’ walls”.

Manager Louis van Gaal had previously refused to play the 24-year-old until his future was resolved and De Gea has now been restored to the team after agreeing a contract extension at Old Trafford last month.

Romero returns to worldwide action this week as Argentina begin their 2018 World Cup qualification campaign against Ecuador, and he has called on his team-mates to step up in the absence of injured talisman Lionel Messi.

Asked whether he feels De Gea is not commanding enough, James replied: “I think he makes a few wonderful saves; he’s very athletic”.

However, according to James, the reason why Real Madrid did not purchase De Gea during the last transfer window, was no that the deal was too late and the clubs could not deliver on time, but that Madrid did not really want him.

Despite looking far less convincing than his counterpart, Romero kept three clean sheets in four Premier League games before De Gea was reintegrated into the starting line-up.
