Tough blow for the Dallas Cowboys as they learned starting quarterback Tony Romo will be out 6-10 weeks with a fractured vertebrae.

With Romo on the bench most of last season with a back injury, the Cowboys suffered through a 4-12 season.

The fourth-round rookie has exceeded the most optimistic of expectations this preseason, completing 39 of 50 passes for 454 yards and five touchdowns, with two rushing touchdowns and no fumbles or interceptions. While many will argue – and with good reason – that preseason stats mean very little, Prescott feels he is more prepared to play at the National Football League level than many other rookie quarterbacks. Then came the preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, where Romo was scrambling out of the pocket and tackled awkwardly by Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril. Garrett said that Romo is “going to start getting into rehab” that will include wearing a back brace to support the compression fracture in his back.

Meanwhile, Garrett echoed owner Jerry Jones in rebuking rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott’s visit to a legal marijuana shop before Thursday’s 27-17 loss. “We’ve heard a wide range of possibilities in terms of when he would be able to play”.
“The mentality is different”, said receiver Dez Bryant, who missed seven games last season because of a broken foot. “But in the meantime we will look and see if there’s a backup out there that would be the right guy in terms of what we’re doing with Dak”. In college, Prescott was praised for his ability as a dual-threat quarterback, but struggled when he had to rely on the passing game for a full drive, similar to the style of Tim Tebow.

“He’s in a situation now where he’s the starter and basically that comment I just said is going to depend on how he plays”.
