Ronaldo, Messi Named in UEFA’s Team of the Year Shortlist

Six Juventus players have been nominated for UEFA’s Team of the Year, including goalkeeper Gigi Buffon.

European champions Barcelona have eight candidates – Gerard Pique, Dani Alves, Javier Mascherano, Ivan Rakitic, Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.

The Premier League contributes five players: Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez, and Manchester City trio Joe Hart, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero.

Only two British players namely Gareth Bale and Joe Hart made the list.

Another City player to join the list is Kevin De Bruyne, the Belgium midfielder having carried over vast form from last season – when he amassed 16 goals and 28 assists in 51 appearances for Wolfsburg.

The Bianconeri reached the Champions League final last season, eventually losing 3-1 to Barcelona in Berlin.

The shortlist features four goalkeepers, 12 defenders, 12 midfielders and 12 strikers.

More than 8.4million votes were cast for the 2014 Team of the Year, with this year’s dream team to be announced shortly after voting is closed on January 5.
