Bale won the trophy with Real Madrid last season when they saw off Atletico Madrid in Milan, to land the 26-year-old his second European title.

Earlier this week, Ronaldo posted a video on Instagram of behind-the-scenes drills at Madrid’s Valdebebas training base, sparking hope of a return against Celta.

Lyon and Norway striker Ada Hegerberg was voted UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe ahead of Amandine Henry and Dzsenifer Marozsan having triumphed in the Women’s Champions League, next year’s final being staged at Cardiff City Stadium.

Ronaldo had 35 league goals and 16 Champions League goals last campaign, adding three at Euro 2016. Antoine Griezmann came in second with 8 votes, closely followed up Gareth Bale, who received 7 votes.

He also had what was probably the best season of his career, individually, as he scored 51 goals in the La Liga and UEFA Champions League, combined.

Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are now the only two players to have won the prize twice.

“It wasn’t fair if I don’t mention these two great players”, the Portuguese said. He scored key goals when they were needed, none more important than the thundering header against Bale and Wales to win the semifinal for Portugal.

After winning the award, Ronaldo said his biggest dream was to be a football player and to have success in football. Ronaldo won it following the 2013-14 season while Messi was the first victor in 2010-11 and the holder from past year. This is the best player award given to footballer player in Europe playing for their football club.
