Rooney enjoys Goodison return

Wayne Rooney will play for Everton once again on Sunday after accepting an invitation to feature in Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial.

Rooney left Goodison Park as a teenager 11 years ago to join Manchester United and has been booed mercilessly by Toffees fans on numerous returns, though the reception has been better in recent years.

It will be the first time since 2004 that Rooney has worn the blue strip, after the forward forced through a move to United by handing in a transfer request, leaving Goodison Park under a cloud.

The Scot invited the Englishman to take part and he duly obliged.

The Spaniards won 2-1, ex-Blues striker Ferguson coming on in the 83rd minute.

Rooney has usually a militant receipt while playing against Everton and started even ignored by professional Sir Alex Ferguson but the ones who hostilities have been stopped today the one-off icon exchanged his red colored for red.

“I was delighted with the fans” reaction, ‘ he told Everton TV.

‘It’s nice to come back here and the fans gave me a great reception, which obviously I was delighted with, ‘ Rooney said. “I didn’t know what to expect with the reception but it was a great reception and I really appreciated it”.

It was great for me and for my kids, to see me once in an Everton shirt.

. Going into the home dressing room again was a bit weird at first. “The day brought back a lot of memories”.

“Most importantly, it was a big day for Duncan and he really enjoyed the game”.
