Rooney Mara is still ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’
Screenwriter Steven Zaillian took a stab at writing the script for the sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire, but Fincher and Sony had a bit of a tumultuous relationship during Dragon Tattoo’s post-production that left both sour on reuniting for the sequel, and so it languished in development hell with minor updates here and there. This one would be based on David Lagercrantz’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web (the fourth book in the Millennium series, and the first not written by the late Larsson), and the principal roles would be recast. But it would seem, Mara is still very much under the impression she’ll put on the eyeliner again.

Mara told me in February she was doubtful she’d ever reprise the role of Lisbeth Salander because she thought the Dragon Tattoo sequel was dead in the water. Star of the last film Rooney Mara (Pan), responded to the reports by stating her intention to return to the series. “I don’t think it’s going to happen”.
We’re happy to report that it appears her feelings have changed, saying “of course” she wants another shot at it. “I’m doing it unless someone tells me that I’m not-and then I still might do it”, Mara said with a laugh. “As far as I know I’m doing it until someone tells me otherwise”, Mara said in a recent interview with E! Alicia Vikander was reportedly in the mix for the role of Lisbeth. And more so than Craig or Fincher, she’s really the face of the would-be franchise.

Earlier this month, a surprising report made the rounds regarding the Dragon Tattoo franchise. Bond does have the Broccolis and Michael G. Wilson to lend a few consistancy to the Bond universe, and this “Dragon Tattoo” follow-up wouldn’t be totally without any returning talent: Producer Scott Rudin is expected to be the common voice between “Dragon Tattoo” and “Spider’s Web”.
