Rooney to quit England after 2018 World Cup

The 30-year-old told reporters: “Realistically I won’t have many tournaments beyond Russian Federation 2018, so I’m planning to enjoy these next two years and try and help the team improve”.

Kane has made a slow start to the 2016/17 Premier League season after failing to score in Tottenham’s opening three games. He may want to play through Russian Federation, but he needs to be good enough to make the team or his global career may end even earlier.

Rooney was named the captain of the national side in 2014 after Steven Gerrard’s retirement from worldwide football.

Rooney captained England to the embarrassing Euro 2016 last-16 defeat by Iceland in the summer, but has been retained by Allardyce in order to lead his side ahead of their qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup.

“We have had to make a few hard decisions and none more so than Ross Barkley”, Allardyce said.

Rooney, 30, is England’s leading all-time scorer with 53 goals in 115 appearances for the Three Lions, and will also overtake David Beckham as England’s most-capped outfield player when Sam Allardyce makes his bow as national team manager in the qualifier against Slovakia. “There have been highs and lows but I’m a proud man”.

“His journey is something that deserves to be in this squad and me to have a look at as a potential player going forward”, Allardyce said.

Rooney’s position in the United squad has come under crticism this season after some disappointing showings, he didn’t have much of a game against Hull, even though he produced the winning play of the game to set up Rashford for the late-winner. I seem to say that after every tournament.

England manager Sam Allardyce addressing the media during a news conference, yesterday.

As captain, he led Bolton to their first cup final in nine years, as they finished runners-up to Middlesbrough FC in the 2004 Football League Cup. “I think that will be the right time to finish”.

Wayne Rooney has announced that he will retire from England duty after the 2018 World Cup.

“You can see he’s a relaxed guy”, Rooney said, with a laugh.

England boss Sam Allardyce says he was “concerned” by previous squads, including players inexperienced at first-team level for their clubs. It’s just a matter of getting on the training pitch. “You can’t forget it, but it’s a new era for us, a new manager”. “I was pleased. It’s nice to captain your country and I’m looking forward to the new regime”.
