His spokesman, Sean O’Flaherty, said he was definitely out of the Scottish Open, which starts on Thursday at Gullane.

McIlroy is the defending champion at the Open, after winning a year ago at Royal Liverpool. Previously McIlroy was a 4-to-1 favorite over Spieth (6/1) in many books.

“Unlucky, obviously”, Luke Donald told The Associated Press.

McIlroy has injured his ankle playing football before. It’s just unlucky timing, especially this time of the year. It’s added a bit of spice to the game.

“Rory is really up against it to play in the Open”, the Englishman explained.

While they’ll all be keen to wish their fellow pro a speedy recover, the absence of McIlroy will certainly open things up at St. Andrews for other competitors. “Fast and healthy recovery”.

It’s an acronym for the “anterior talofibular ligament”, which is one of the more commonly damaged ligaments on the outside of the ankle. Even when able to walk unaided, the ankle will receive a huge amount of pressure, as it’s where weight is shifted towards while generating power as you swing.

Ex- Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance said he was taken by surprise by the news on Monday when asked by reporters as he made his way into Wimbledon to watch the day’s tennis action. He won the World Golf Championships Match Play and the Wells Fargo Championship in May.

Rory McIlroy is in doubt for The Open Championship following a severe ankle injury.

“So sad to hear about @McIlroyRory injury on his ankle”, Garcia tweeted Monday. There is already speculation that McIlroy could also miss the PGA Championship – he is the defending champ for that tournament as well – at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, which starts August 13.

“But should he be playing football?” What’s wrong with that?…
