Where’s the beef? Of the courses available on disc only eight of them are real. To do this, we had to start at the ground up with the Frostbite 3 engine. There’s some decent looking day and night skyboxes on display, courses are varied and alive, occasionally with bits of wildlife peeking in from just outside the rough. Once you’ve created a golfer and headed onto the course, within a few rounds you’ll question the perennial sunshine: there’s no weather effects aside from wind. Also, commentary was surprisingly repetitive in a short span of time, I could go forever without hearing the “plumber” comment when missing a putt again. The biggest problem with the career mode is the incredibly restrictive character creation suite, which is easily the worst in any sports game this generation. First is a typical head to head in either ranked or unranked, where you face off against other golfers. Choose a backstory (prodigy, collegiate, instructor) and earn bonuses to increase your player’s skill. This is something that is much more laid back and relaxed than the other online mode, as it can be played at your own pace, but it is still something that can be very enticing to participate in anyways.
