PGA Championship victor Jimmy Walker was a further shot back from Casey in third whilst Australian Adam Scott came fourth on 11-under-par for the tournament.

McIlroy’s stunning success at the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday ended a wait of 16 months for a win on the PGA Tour.

It also catapulted him from 38th to fourth place in the standings for the lucrative FedExCup post-season series.

The four-time major victor will rise 34 places in the FedEx Cup standings after this latest victory and will join the leading 70 players in the race at the BMW Championship next week.

“From three holes in – four over par – there were a lot of things going through my mind, and one of them was not winning this tournament”, he added.

“It’s fantastic in this game how things can change so quickly”, McIlroy said.

He played the next 15 holes in 4 under to get back to even par, which contributed mightily to his 20th victory worldwide.

“I think when people make judgements or criticisms without being educated on the subject that they’re criticizing, I think that’s like for me getting in the gym, for example, that’s my pet peeve”, McIlroy said.

But runner-up Paul Casey, who was the overnight leader and had led McIlroy by six shots heading into the final round, summed it up best with his straightforward, one-word response to how he felt his opponent had played in yesterday’s final round.

PGA champion Jimmy Walker finished three adrift of McIlroy after shooting a 70. Someone that says to me you’re in the gym too much.

“To me it looks like he hasn’t got so frustrated this year, he’s just kept doing his thing”.

Rose’s round collapsed on the back nine, when two triple bogeys left him in a tie for 57th place.

McIlroy, a four-time major victor, will hope history can repeat itself. His last victory at the Deutsche Bank in 2012 was followed by another win at the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick, Indiana – the same venue for this year’s tournament.

Back in February, Chamblee said McIlroy’s ‘extensive weightlifting” was a “concern” for him – to which the 27-year-old responded on Twitter with a video of him lifting – while at The Open, Miller said he got “carried away with wearing tight shirts and showing off his muscles’.

His putting, which has so often let him down when he needed it most, was on fire as he rolled in several key putts on his way to victory, with his switch to a new Scotty Cameron putter undoubtedly a positive change.
