Rory McIlroy Will Miss The British Open

While Dustin Johnson always seems to be in contention at the big events, he is never able to close it out, as he is still searching for his first major win.

ESPN reports that Rory McIlroy will not be returning to defend his title in the Open Championship. McIlroy was listed at 6-to-1.

On Sportsbook.ag, Spieth was listed at 9-to-2; McIroy at 8-to-1.

Spieth said this week that he happily plays basketball with his caddie and also revealed a near miss on a fishing trip after he won the US Open last month when a shark took a tuna he was trying to reel in and nearly pulled him overboard. Since then he has posted 10 top-10s, including three wins and two seconds. “I am into my first Open Championship and can’t wait to give it a blast”. The following week he won the Masters to make the jump to No. 2.

Russell Knox was playing the 12th hole in the pro-am at the Scottish Open when he checked his phone and saw he’d received a text from his wife.

On Monday, McIlroy announced that he suffered a total rupture of his ATFL (the anterior talofibular ligament and the one most commonly sprained) in his ankle while playing soccer with friends Saturday.

I realize the prevailing sentiment surrounding McIlroy’s withdrawal from The Open field has focused on the advantage that seems to accrue to Jordan Spieth as he charges forward in his pursuit of the Grand Slam, as though there are no obstacles in his path aside from Rory McIlroy. But the Instagram photo took the act of withdrawing to another level of social media. He’s the kind of guy that if he practiced 24/7 and got too much in his own head it’s not going to help him. “But should he be playing football [soccer]?” I had two weeks off and it was hard not to play because I knew I was on good form and I’m excited to be here, still on good form.

Golfers preparing for the Scottish Open at Gullane were quick to come to his defence earlier yesterday. What’s wrong with that?…

Athletes from other sports often play golf to relax in a peaceful setting.

For Rose and the rest of a strong field, which includes Americans Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar, the absence of the four-time major victor boosts their title chances over the links on Scotland’s east coast.

He put a scare into the leaders at Chambers Bay in the final round of the U.S. Open, closing with a 66. It was at the Dunhill Links in 2007 that he finished third to earn his European Tour card. Nobody wants to get in because someone else got injured.
