The win at TPC Boston is McIlroy’s 12th PGA Tour victory.
“It’s just incredible how things can change in this game from being three over par early in this tournament”, he said.
It was McIlroy’s first victory since clearing Patrick Rodgers and Webb Simpson by seven shots at the 2015 Wells Fargo Championship.
“World heavyweight title”, McIlroy said of the belt.
From the depths of frustration, Rory McIlroy has re-energised his season to the extent that his victory in the Deutsche Bank championship in Boston – where he overcame a six-shot deficit on Paul Casey at the start of the final round to win by two – has catapulted him into the mix for the $10 million bonus that awaits the victor of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoff series.
“There were a lot of things going through my mind and one of them was not winning this golf tournament but from thereon I have played some great golf and holed some great putts this week”.
“It is unbelievable to think how I started this tournament and what was going through my mind after three holes, and then all of a sudden (I’m) standing here with a trophy”.
But the affable Englishman, who elected not to take up European Tour membership this year, did not count on McIlroy’s storming finish. He is also projected to jump from 38th to fourth in the FEC standings. Sep.
The result puts Scott at fifth in the points standings after two of the four playoffs tournaments as players battle for the FedEx Cup and its $US10 million bonus payment.
“I came off the back of a rough couple of weeks”, he said. Adam Scott matched McIlroy’s final-round 65, to move into sole possession of fourth place.
Casey, who began the day with a three-shot lead on 15 under, had to settle for second after carding a two-over-par 73.
“Wow, very impressive. Yeah, that’s a might round of golf”, Casey said of McIlroy’s finish. Hearn closed with a 70 and tied for eighth.
That brought Casey within one stroke of McIlroy.

Casey needed an eagle at No. 18 to tie McIlroy after his par at No. 17, but missed a 58-foot putt that would have forced a playoff and parred the hole. Back in 2012, he won his first Deutsche Bank title, then he went to Crooked Stick for its turn to host the BMW Championship and dominated the field.
