And Wolff was positively gushing as he saw Hamilton win by nearly seven seconds from Rosberg with 18-year-old Max Verstappen third before being promoted a place. He is also now just one point ahead of teammate and championship rival Lewis Hamilton in the standings.
“I tried to calm them down because it’s been such a great day that I feel like we’re better than that”, Hamilton, who himself was subjected to boos at the last race in Austria, said.
Rosberg finished second to teammate Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone, but the German was demoted to third after the team were deemed guilty of breaching the strict rules governing radio instructions to the driver.
Behind the leaders, Australian Daniel Ricciardo took fourth for Red Bull, while Kimi Raikkonen was fifth for Ferrari after a battle with Force India’s Sergio Perez. Carlos Sainz of Toro Rosso was eighth, ahead of the struggling Sebastian Vettel who said his Ferrari was too slow.
“It’s not really the right thing to do because I should mention how much I appreciate the majority of the people that support me”.
The British GP started behind the Safety Car thanks to rain coming down rather heavily on track.
With Verstappen gaining quickly, Rosberg informed the team of a gearbox problem six laps from home.
Rosberg slowed on lap 47 after reporting “gearbox problems” and fell back three seconds to 11 adrift of Hamilton.
But Rosberg caught up with Verstappen, and on lap 38 managed an overtake on the exit of Becketts to reclaim his second place, although it gets controversial from there.

“Having considered the matter extensively, the Stewards determined that the team gave some instructions to the driver that were specifically permitted under Technical Directive 014-16”, said a statement from race officials.
