In this pic, the father doesn’t have duct tape on him and is holding up a sign that says “Peace on Earth”. All it does is reinforce that – and for young, impressionable children. I personally know this household, and have recognized them for a few years.

Although the family and the photographer meant no harm with these photos, the idea it portrayed will never be widely accepted.

People who commented to defend Hawkes’ family photo certainly didn’t think the girls were abused. “The family looks like they have a wonderful sense of humor”. But there are images that are harmless, silly family fun and images that elicit a collective “WTF?”-and rarely do the latter go viral out of amusement”. As much as I see the intent to be amusing, I also can’t deny the sentiments of those who oppose such imagery, because of what it references.
