Rotherham end ‘incredible journey’ under Evans

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans has left the Championship club after over three years with the Millers.

However, Evans has made a decision to walk away from his project at the New York Stadium, with assistant manager Paul Raynor following him out the door.

An official statement, released on the club’s website on Monday, claimed that following a meeting with chairman Tony Stewart, it had become clear that in the short term at least, both parties wished to move in a “different direction”.

Evans had been in the job for three-and-a-half years, leading the Millers to back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship.

“The meeting was at all times positive, constructive and straightforward”. It was clear that the “Chairman and the management team only wanted what they felt was best for Rotherham United Football Club”.

So “both parties want to head in different directions” – does that mean one party wants to carry on moving up and the other party wants to go down?

Rotherham United have parted company with manager Steve Evans after a disappointing start to the Championship season.

‘Rotherham United Football Club will always welcome Steve and Paul whether as an opposition management team or as supporters of our fantastic football club’.

Rotherham, who lie 20th in the second tier having finished a place worse off last season, will be led by experienced coach Eric Black for the time being.

Eric will Black take on the managerial role on a caretaker basis. The club were also docked four points and fined £100,000 by the Football Association.
