Rough start bites Kazmir, Dodgers in loss to Diamondbacks

With Shipley out of the game in the seventh inning, the Dodgers looked to catch lightning in a bottle as they tried to rally from a four-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh for the second night in a row. Friday’s seventh inning between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks lasted an MLB-record 72 minutes!

Starting pitcher Bud Norris left Sunday’s game after 13 pitches and one out. He has not resumed any baseball activities with no timetable for a return, said manager Dave Roberts. Norris described it as an “achy, dead pain” in the middle of his back below his shoulder blade, something he has experienced before. He hesitated to guarantee he’ll be ready for his next start, saying that will be determined by how he feels during his between-starts bullpen session in a couple days.

The Dodgers had already shortened their rotation to four pitchers with a glut of three off days in an eight-day span ending Monday. Corbin is 3-6 with a 4.48 ERA and 41 strikeouts in his career against the Dodgers.

“It’s just balancing the fact I don’t think he’s a DL, but I don’t want to put him in harm’s way”, Roberts said.

Jean Segura led the Diamondbacks out of the gate with a leadoff homer and Arizona had a 2-0 lead before Shipley took the hill.

With runners on first and third, Dodgers reliever Ross Stripling bounced a pitch in the dirt that catcher Grandal blocked. The ball ricocheted up and hit Grandal’s face mask, then dropped and got wedged between his body and chest protector.

The play was ruled a wild pitch, resulting in David Peralta advancing from first base to second base and Jake Lamb being allowed to cross home plate from third base. “I had never seen that personally”. Arizona committed two errors and at least two other misplays (Yasmany Tomas turned catchable drives into doubles) that didn’t officially go in the books as errors. Both Dominic Leone and Steve Hathaway coughed up three-run homers – the latter making his debut, as the Dodgers scored 14 unanswered runs. Corey Seager drilled his 30th double of the season with two outs in the third, tying the Dodgers’ rookie record for doubles set by Eric Karros in 1992. Puig is batting a disappointing.254 with seven home runs in 80 games for the Dodgers, who trail first-place San Francisco by two games in the National League West.Rookie Andrew Toles has made a positive impression while starting in place of Puig, who has made just one pinch-hitting appearance since suffering a strained hamstring July 21. The Diamondbacks scored a run that inning without getting a hit and added two more in the fourth inning.

“We didn’t play a very good ballgame today”, Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said.
