Row As Striking Doctors Ordered Back To Work
The hospital was not able to say how many appointments had been cancelled or how many staff would be taking part in the action.

However, Jon Woods, Portsmouth Trades Council president, said that although the strikes would cause disruption in the short-term, they would help improve overall patient care in the long-term.
“Our plans aim to minimise disruption to our patients as much as possible, although to ensure safe care we have cancelled five surgical procedures and 126 outpatient appointments which had been scheduled for the day of the industrial action”.
Ms Ward said: “As always, we would like to remind local residents to consider alternatives first, such as pharmacists, GP surgeries and the NHS 111 service”.
“We are contacting those patients that are affected by the reduction in our elective services and for those whose services have been postponed; we will be in touch to rearrange appointments as soon as we can”.
South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust said there have been some cancellations, but by and large it is “business as usual”.
Across the country, up to 45,000 junior doctors will go on strike after three weeks of talks broke down between the British Medical Association and the government.
The 24-hour strike will be followed by a 48-hour walk out on January 26 and a third day of action in February.
The basis for the current round of negotiations is the Government’s offer from early November, including an 11% rise in basic pay for junior doctors.
A Doncaster health boss has admitted appointments will have to be cancelled when junior doctors go on strike.
Mr Hunt said: “Our absolute priority is making sure the NHS delivers high-quality care, seven days a week”. But this is offset by plans to cut the number of hours on a weekend for which juniors can claim extra pay for unsocial hours.
Under the changes, unsociable hours would start at 10pm rather than 7pm from Monday to Friday and end at 7am.
The East Kent hospitals trust – which looks after the William Harvey in Ashford, as well as Kent and Canterbury Hospital and the QEQM hospital in Margate – says it has also rescheduled some non urgent appointments in order to cope with doctor shortages.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister branded the walkout as “not necessary and damaging”, warning: “You can’t have a strike on this scale in our NHS without there being some real difficulties for patients and potentially worse”.
To see your doctor: Some GPs may be trainee doctors who could be involved in the strike but you will have been notified if this applies to you.
