Royals beat Mets 7-1 for 2-0 World Series lead

In Game 2, he was better than deGrom, and the Royals took a 4-1 lead after seven innings. And as Volquez threw six innings, allowing three runs and six hits, it’s still unclear if he knew that his dad had died hours before the game. There, with the Royals in the World Series and the attention of the baseball world squarely upon him, he could escape his troubles for a time. “I feel good now, so I don’t think the rest hurt me”. The series shifts to Friday night at Citi Field in New York City.

The Royals said the team found out about Volquez’s father’s death before the game.

“I’ve learned that they hit mistakes very well”, Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud said.

Volquez has returned to be with his family in the Dominican Republic for the funeral. “But I don’t know if I’ll be ready for that appearance”, he said.

This was a World Series billed as a battle pitting the young power arms of the New York Mets against the relentless, contact-happy Kansas City hitters. “I felt like I fell off a turnip truck, honestly”, Avelutto said.

The Royals and Mets have a day off Thursday.

Yost said after the game that it wasn’t his place to tell Edinson Volquez about his father – but was anxious his pitcher might find out somehow given how the news was already circulating. The Mets scored their lone run in the fourth on a Lucas Duda RBI single, which came after third baseman Mike Moustakas’s errant throw prevented the Royals from completing an inning-ending double play. “When someone loses a family member, that takes priority over everything that happens”.

It’s a historic first for the Dominican Republic, a haven for baseball talent for generations – but no more so than today.

“Thank God I got the opportunity to close this game out”, Cueto said. The Mets simply don’t have the lineup depth to keep up if they go hitless for five innings.

The next time they see Eric Hosmer and his teammates may be in a parade.

“He’s going to be missed the next couple of days”.

Moore ushered Volquez into manager Ned Yost’s office, where Volquez’s wife, Roandry, and 2-year-old twin daughters were awaiting to break the news to him.

“I was really monitoring him”.

Condolences to Volquez, a pitcher and a son. He retired the last 16 of the final 17 batters he faced, making 122 pitches in becoming the first AL pitcher to complete a Series game and give up so few hits since 1967.

“It was the type of outing we needed, especially after the way we used our bullpen last night”. The last name Mondesi is back once again, though it’s not the person you are probably thinking of. But Cueto, a 20-game victor a year ago, showed that he can still pitch like an ace on the sport’s biggest stage.

“We used to play stickball in the street”.

The Royals picked up three insurance runs in the eighth.

“Johnny thrives in this environment”, Yost said.

As ideal as could be, given the circumstances.

“We asked it not be reported until we were positive he was aware and when we knew he’d been told, we told Fox they could report it”.
