“I don’t know if it’s cool when you’re trying to win every day and they’ve won eight in a row and they won the World Series a year ago”, Mattingly said Tuesday before the Kansas City Royals pushed their streak to nine with a 1-0 win in the opener of a three-game Interleague series at Marlins Park.

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Andrew Cashner winds up during the first inning of the team’s baseball game against the Kansas City Royals, Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016, in Miami.

Chris Davis hit his 30th home run as Baltimore breezed past Washington.

Ventura (9-9), who reached 101 miles per hour on the scoreboard radar gun, allowed six hits and one walk while striking out six.

Kansas City is a hotbed for barbecue and the blues.

Mets 7, Cardinals 4: Robert Gsellman, pressed into action after starter Jonathon Niese left with an injury in the first inning, picked up the win in his debut for NY.

Miami mounted serious scoring chances in three innings against Ventura but was 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position against him.

They ended 0-for-10 with RISP. “You had a sense early on that it was going to be a tight, low-scoring game”. “Our guy was throwing the ball good, their guy was throwing it good”.

Ventura pitched out of a sticky jam in the bottom of the sixth when Marcell Ozuna doubled to lead off the inning.

The Marlins played their 15th consecutive game decided by three runs or less, a club record. They pulled within 7.5 games of AL Central leading Cleveland pending the results of their game against Oakland. The Marlins kept the All-Star first baseman in check as he went 0-for-3 with a walk.

White Sox 9, Phillies 1 • Jose Abreu homered for a third straight game and Carlos Rodon threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings for host Chicago. Fox Sports Kansas City announcer Steve Physioc mentioned that Ozuna’s wife is pregnant, so we expect that the “emergency” will yield some happy news on Wednesday. This was the first game between Miami and Kansas City since the Marlins took two out of three from the Royals three years ago.

Cain was caught stealing in the sixth when the initial call of safe was overturned by replay. “Tonight was worse than it has been, but I found a way to get it done”, he said.
