Royals Hold off Rays

Danny Duffy pitched eight innings of one-hit baseball on Monday night, setting a Kansas City Royals record with 16 strikeouts against the Tampa Bay Rays.

“There’s been a number of occasions when Danny’s stepped on the mound and I said this might be the night”, Ned Yost said.

That will look to change tonight when Yordano Ventura gets the ball for the Royals.

Scott Schebler’s three-run homer in the ninth inning rallied the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

“That’s just the stark reality of the game and the business we’re in”, Evans said, adding of his conversation with Duffy: “He was very clear, there’s no place he would have rather been than a San Francisco Giant”. “But that’s the way it goes. They pitched well against us”.

The Rays got a leadoff double in the eighth from Corey Dickerson, putting the tying run in scoring position with no outs. At right is Tim Beckham.

Nationals 14, Diamondbacks 1 • Daniel Murphy had three hits, scored three times and drove in a run, and Stephen Strasburg allowed one run in six innnings to improve to 15-1 as Washington rolled on the road.

The ideal game bid would end in the fourth, when Logan Forsythe reached base on a six-pitch walk.

Brad Miller called it a punch to the gut that newly acquired Matt Duffy has been anointed to replace him as Tampa Bay’s starting shortstop.

Duffy (7-1) even flirted with the Royals’ first no-hitter in almost 25 years before giving up a line-drive double to Desmond Jennings leading off the Tampa Bay eighth.

Duffy might be the most popular Giant to be traded since 1996, when Brian Sabean, as a rookie GM, sent All-Star third baseman Matt Williams to the Cleveland Indians. After winning four in a row the Rays offense never got going and has the team looking at back to back defeats.

It’s not the first time I’ve mentioned this, but just in case you arrived late to the party it’s worth mentioning again; starters pitch like marathoners, relievers pitch like sprinters. Darvish says he is ready for 100 pitches after coming back from Tommy John surgery, but that remains to be seen.

Kansas City took a 1-0 lead in the first with a two-out single from Lorenzo Cain and an RBI single from Eric Hosmer.

He allowed a run in the first inning on a pair of two-out singles with a stolen base mixed in.

Kendrys Morales helped Duffy secure the win by collecting two hits, one of which was a solo home run. He can fill in as an outfielder or infielder. Garton, 26, had a 5.17 ERA in 15 relief appearances earlier this season with the Rays, including a save.
