Raul Mondesi, Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer all homered off Justin Verlander (12-7), while Kendrys Morales went deep off Mark Lowe. Ventura is 6-0 with a 3.18 ERA in nine career games against the Tigers and was held out of the decision at Detroit on July 17 despite scattering two runs over seven frames.Sanchez is trying to bounce back from a bad outing in which he was ripped for eight runs on eight hits – four home runs – and a pair of walks in four-plus innings at Texas on Friday. Even with two more on Wednesday, they still rank last in the American League. Hosmer hurt the Tigers again with a two-run shot in the ninth off reliever Shane Greene, giving the Royals the lead for good. Drew Butera worked a full count before blooping a pitch to short right field, which scored Dyson.

Duffy leads the AL in WHIP (0.98) and ranks second with a 2.73 ERA and 5.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered for Detroit, which has lost seven of its last nine. Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Hosmer’s hit was the first real threat by the Royals. Bruce Rondon came in from the bullpen and struck out Paolo Orlando, but Cheslor Cuthbert hit a blooper to shallow center that Ian Kinsler got under, but dropped. Aviles was hitting.210 with one home run and six RBIs this season.

Eric Hosmer ended it when he drove a curveball off the wall in left-center for a double.

Sanchez threw a no-hitter for the Marlins against Arizona on September 6, 2006. LHP Jason Vargas, who has missed the entire season after Tommy John surgery, was scheduled to start Wednesday night for Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Slugger Miguel Cabrera sat out with a left biceps strain. Ausmus said Collins is expected to miss a few games. In 2011, Aybar bunted to try to break up Justin Verlander’s no-hitter in the eighth inning, drawing an angry response from both the Tigers ace and the fans.

Verlander joked that the Tigers trading for Aybar on Tuesday made him glad he didn’t retaliate.

The under is 12-4 in Kansas City’s last 16 overall and is 9-3 in their last 12 on grass while going 7-3 in their last 10 road games.
