Vice-captain Joe Root was absent from training with an upset stomach, but is not thought to be a doubt for the Test. The 32-year-old, who was born in Durban , also survived a near run out after dashing a single to get off the mark.

But his fiercest critic was Cruz, who went after him for his leadership role – as a member of the so-called “Gang of Eight” – on a comprehensive immigration bill in 2013 that would have created a path to citizenship for illegal aliens and let the president admit refugees without background checks.

Christmas Eve Forecast: Record-shattering warmth today
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in some parts of the country, but in others it feels more like a typical spring day. Green Christmas wins out this year with record-breaking temperatures making for a holiday that could get Heat Miser singing.

While Bush has been willing to bash Trump for months – firing off one of his biggest shots last week when he called his rival “unhinged” for proposing a ban on Muslims entering the country – Bush’s Tuesday debate performance showcased a new turbocharged offensive against the billionaire businessman.

Baier quoted Cruz, in audio leaked to The New York Times, saying that the question of national-security “judgment” would ultimately be “challenging” for Trump. “Because I could tell you this, as a former federal prosecutor, if a center for the developmentally disabled in San Bernardino, California, is now a target for terrorists, that means everywhere in America is a target for these terrorists”. Baier asked, referencing the Tuesday CNN debate in which Cruz refused to repeat that argument against Trump.

He spoke as if the debate was not yet over. Trump added, “I’ve gained great respect for the Republican leadership”, pointing into the audience, presumably in the direction of RNC Chairman Reince Priebus. “I think Assad is a bad guy, a very bad guy, all right?” he said. On the other were those skeptical of “getting stuck in Middle Eastern civil wars”, as Cruz put it, or “toppling secular dictators in the Middle East”, as Rand Paul said. “Mostly it struck me as a debate in which no one was really focused on drawing the sharpest and most vigorous contrasts that they could”.

Rubio and Cruz also had opposing views on what authorities the government should have to monitor Americans’ communications. It was over the top at times-he mentioned his experience as a prosecutor so often it’s possible that viewers may forget he’s a sitting governor.

“I’m not going to be using a press conference or a debate to reveal classified information”, Rubio said.

“Sen. Cruz unequivocally – unequivocally – does not support legalization”, Sweet said. What he knows is that the old program covered 20 percent to 30 percent of phone numbers to search for terrorists.

Thirty-five percent of registered Republicans think Trump won the contest in Las Vegas, according to a One America News Network survey released Wednesday.

“That gives us greater ability to stop acts of terrorism, and [Rubio] knows that that’s the case”, Cruz said late Tuesday.

So it’s Rubio-Trump-Cruz, and just maybe Christie lingering on the outside.

Cruz told his supporters privately that his strategy has been to smother Trump and another candidate, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, with “love” in order to scoop up their supporters when they eventually fade in the race. “He’s got plans. Most of the other candidates, from my perspective, all they want to do is, ‘Well, we’re going to get rid of this”.
