Rubio under pressure as Republicans debate in South Carolina

“I believe Senator Sanders’ disparaging comments towards the president are misplaced, misguided, and do not give credit where credit is due”, the New York Democrat said. Marco Rubio, under vast pressure to prove himself after a devastating fifth-place finish, was looking for a fight that could last for months or even spill into the first contested GOP national convention since 1976.

“We won conservatives”, Cruz said.

The results suggest that Trump is improving his political skills and emerging as a more serious political threat to the Republican mainline.

“He really changed the narrative around his campaign”, said Republican strategist Matt Mackowiak.

New Hampshire voters leaned more moderate on immigration overall than Trump. Now, he has said, he doesn’t have the luxury of abstaining from the swipe fest between candidates.

After the Republican primary, the Democrats will have their SC primary one week later on February 27. They’ve been campaigning in the state for months, have organizations in the state, and have prominent supporters: U.S. Sen Lindsey Graham for Bush and U.S. Sen.

But Rubio, more than any of his Republican rivals, is seeing the 2016 contest through the eyes of his children as he tries to mount a comeback in SC.

On the Democratic side, US Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a democratic socialist, easily defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the New Hampshire primary.

Rath, the Kasich adviser, said: “We have a lot of people who have been promising money if we perform”.

The race also showed a significant winnowing Wednesday as both New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina ended their campaigns after finishing far down the ballot in New Hampshire. “He does basically the second best against Hillary Clinton out of any one in the field after Marco Rubio”.

With the stakes so high, the mud-slinging and political attacks are only expected to escalate – particularly heading into a state that’s infamous for its tough, bare-knuckle politics.

Crowd-sourcing: Name of the new party we’ll have to start if Trump wins the GOP nomination?

Trump: Far from being humbled by winning silver in Iowa, Trump blew away the competition in New Hampshire by winning nearly a third of the vote. At a rally in Spartanburg, Rubio called the state “definitive and determinative”. For the past year, pundits and political insiders have been confidently predicting that voters would sour on Trump as Election Day drew near, or that a defeat for Trump in Iowa would suddenly lead voters elsewhere to abandon him. GOP officials have already had early discussions about such a July scenario, which could be triggered if no candidate secures a majority of delegates by convention time.

Donald Trump: After his second place finish in Iowa, Trump Donald threw heavy shade at first place finisher Ted Cruz via Twitter. His $28.4 million ad buy is more concentrated, spanning six states in addition to upcoming Nevada and SC.

Seeking votes at a local business in Charleston, Kasich worked to burnish his reputation as a results-oriented leader.

“I think people are exhausted of what I call ‘campaign conservatives.’ They talk a good game, but haven’t walked the walk”, Cruz said. “And if the country doesn’t solve its problems, it gets flabby”.

The Cruz campaign dismissed the blast with spokesman Rick Tyler saying Trump was demonstrating a “Trumper-tantrum”.

It will be the first time that the ex-commander in chief campaigns with Jeb at a public event since the former governor of Florida launched his presidential bid last June.

Though he placed fourth on Tuesday, Bush was hoping that Rubio’s slump would forestall his own ouster from the race.

“I guess I’ve had a little front row seat watching history unfold just given the uniqueness of my family”, he said, referring to his father, former George H.W. Bush, who was a decent man, and his brother, former President George W. Bush, who “always wore a suit into the Oval Office”.
