Running back Jamaal Charles unlikely to play for Chiefs in opener

The San Diego Chargers head to Arrowhead to face the Chiefs, and they may be walking into a buzz-saw.

Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid sounded his most pessimistic note yet about the availability of running back Jamaal Charles for Sunday’s season opener against the San Diego Chargers.

Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware combined for more than 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, a lot of them after Charles went down in Week 5. After sitting during the anthem in the Seahawks’ final preseason game last Thursday, Lane said 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick reached out to him to thank him for his support and his matching gesture.

“We’ll see how he (Charles) does after a couple days off”. Rivers threw for 403 yards against Detroit in Chargers opener last season.

Every year there are some games in week 1 that the lines are just too big. At times, I’ll find myself thinking, “YEAH!”

Hopefully, the Chargers will get the player they used a first-round draft pick on in 2015. Joey Bosa could be a great player one day but for now, he’s a rookie with little game experience after missing nearly the entire preseason.

The most experienced cornerback on the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster is entering his third year in the NFL. “Four or five years ago it was regarded by many to be a weak division. You still gotta go out there and compete”. It’s tough to know whether or not San Diego was doing the same thing. Ware ran for 403 yards and six touchdowns. Mostly, it was determined by game situations and which player was most effective in a given game. The Chiefs defeated the Chargers in a sloppy, defensive game by the score of 10-3.

Reid also confirmed that pass rusher Tamba Hali and safety Eric Berry will be available against San Diego, even though neither of the veterans participated in a preseason game.

Gaines won back his starting job in training camp, and will pair with Defensive Rookie of the Year Marcus Peters in giving the Chiefs perhaps the youngest starting tandem in the NFL. The All-Pro safety did not sign his franchise tender and report to training camp until August 31, so he missed all of the preseason. Alex Smith and the Chiefs’ offense should be ready to go and begin the year off with a win.

Reid certainly did not count out Charles, but it does seem like the Chiefs will be without their star back at least for one week.
