The left-hander went above and beyond for four innings, facing the minimum before coming undone in a three-run seventh inning.

“He threw well. We kept it close and they got the big hit there, but if you look at his game that’s a pretty good effort he gave us.”

Former Giants prospect Tommy Joseph hit a leadoff double and scored two batters later when Blanco bounced a single up the middle, just past Bumgarner’s glove.

Rupp’s homer culminated a seven-pitch at-bat that started with Bumgarner falling behind 3-0.

“I’ve got to come in the zone”, Bumgarner said.

Rupp connected a 90 miles per hour fastball on a 3-2 pitch.

“They’ve done it so many times, it’s not like they’re feeling any pressure up there”, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of his club’s hitting in clutch situations. “I don’t know how I missed it. I felt like I had it the whole way”. He dominated us the first six innings. The last Phillies pitcher to record 20 saves before July 1 was RHP Tom Gordon in 2006…. Needing one more appearance to tie 3B Willie Jones (1,521) for ninth place on the Phillies’ all-time list for games played, 1B Ryan Howard never left the bench in Saturday’s contest….

“San Francisco is a good team”, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. “It was huge., Guys were very vocal in the dugout”.

Hellickson ended six-game winless streak with six innings of five-hit ball.

Conor Gillaspie hit a game-ending RBI double with one out in the ninth inning to lift San Francisco past the Philadelphia Phillies 8-7 on Sunday and give Bochy his milestone win. Philadelphia got one inning of scoreless relief from three relievers _ Edubray Ramos, David Hernandez and Jeanmar Gomez, with Gomez picking up his 20th save.

“It’s huge, especially against a guy who dominated us for six innings”, Rupp said of the come-from-behind win, just the Phillies’ third in 36 games this season when trailing entering the seventh. Santiago Casilla got the last two outs for his 17th save and second in two days.

The Phillies scored in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Joseph, with the Giants tying it in the bottom of the inning when Crawford’s ground out scored Pagan, who reached on a one-out single and went to third on a double by Belt. Luckily, Tyler Goeddel was able to make a potentially game-saving grab in shallow left field after sliding to make the catch and doubling Joe Panik off second base.

“I don’t think John McGraw has anything to worry about, ” Bochy said.

Manager Bruce Bochy sent Jarrett Parker to hit, with the Phillies opting to go to the left-handed Araujo.

A wild pitch advanced Franco to third, but Bumgarner stranded him there, retaining a 2-0 lead, with a short flyball and two groundouts.

“When I got back from the D.L., it’s not a secret, you’re not 100 percent on your timing, ” Pagan said. Ramiro Pena, however, charged the ball, unloaded quickly and just got Goedell at first to end the game. Those little things catch up with you in these close games.

If the Phillies were to trade Hellickson after the start, they would open a spot for Velasquez without having to demote one of their current corps of young pitchers. He is eligible to be reinstated from the 15-day disabled list and is a candidate to rejoin the starting rotation next week in Arizona. San Francisco RHP Matt Cain (strained right hamstring) threw a bullpen session before Sunday’s game and will throw live batting practice on Tuesday. A decision on his future is expected afterward.
