The actor is reportedly in talks to play Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde in Tom Cruise’s upcoming Mummy reboot. Taking a cue from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the studio is in “early talks” with Russell Crowe to make an appearance in the film as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, setting up future appearances in the planned Monster Movie Universe.

Filming on The Mummy has already begin in England with Cruise as a Navy SEAL who must battle a rampaging mummy in the Iraq desert. If Crowe lands the role, he’ll play the tormented doctor/madman with the possibility to get his own spinoff film.

Variety reporter Justin Kroll revealed on Twitter that the role was originally meant to go to Tom Hardy, but the deal fell apart. There are rumors that Angelina Jolie is being eyed for the lead role, and possibly even to direct the project, although that has not been given in an official statement by the studio.

The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman, who also produces alongside Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious series, Wanted) and Sean Daniel (The Mummy trilogy, The Best Man series). Confirmed titles so far include The Bride of Frankenstein (written by Guzikowski), The Wolfman (written by David Koepp), Van Helsing and The Invisible Man, the latter of which has Johnny Depp attached to star with a release date set for April 13, 2018.
