Russell homers 5th time in five games

Roughed up for the second straight start, deGrom (7-7) allowed five runs on 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings. Arrieta has two no-hitters in the past year. Evan Longoria stopped the streak with a two-run homer off Matt Barnes in the ninth. Heyward’s first two at-bats Monday were frustrating and familiar – a groundout to first base and inning-ending strikeout – but his fifth-inning at-bat resulted in a three-run home run that just eluded the glove of the leaping right fielder Kivlehan.

The Padres, who have lost seven of nine, had only one runner reach third base in the opening five innings. The Padres got him back in the game a little over the next two innings.

In addition to the three homers, former Padre Anthony Rizzo had a four-hit game for the Cubs. That set up Russell’s sacrifice fly for his second RBI in two innings. He struck out eight and walked two in winning for the 10th time in his last 11 decisions.

Nick Buss hit his first major league home run for the Angels. The left-hander improved to 5-0 with six quality starts out of seven since the All-Star break. He stole second and scored when Cain drilled a 3-0 pitch to center.

Carter’s solo homer to left in the third, his 30th of the season, off Chad Bettis (10-7) extended Milwaukee’s lead to 4-1. Let Arrieta finish – and in turn help his Cy Young chances – or be more prudent and save some pitches for more important games down the line. “I thought Kyle would be good this season, but he’s been better than I expected”. Ryan Schimpf loves extra bases (a double and a triple).

Carrasco (9-6) was masterful while limiting the A’s to four hits over eight innings.

Washington shortstop Trea Turner had a career-high four hits, but he was called out twice attempting to steal second.

Dexter Fowler opened the game with a double to right center. Cubs starting pitchers are 15-1 in August with an earned run average of 1.83.

MINNEAPOLIS – Victor Martinez and Erick Aybar homered, and Anibal Sanchez pitched seven solid innings to lead Detroit to a win over Minnesota at Target Field.

Chicago outscored the Friars 16-7 during the series and stretched the gap in the NL Central division to 14 games over the Cardinals. That was the closest they ever got to a lead.

Where does he stand in the National League Cy Young race?

Gsellman allowed two hits and three walks while striking out two.

Gonzalez’s three-run shot in the seventh tied his career high for homers.

Logan (2-3) struck out Scooter Gennett and intentionally walked Braun before giving way to Carlos Estevez.

SEATTLE – CC Sabathia continued his mastery at Safeco Field, pitching seven strong innings to improve to 9-1 there as NY beat Seattle. Hendricks struck out six while retiring 12 of the last 14 hitters he faced. The Cubs turned three double plays while a thunderous lineup led by Kris Bryant (33rd home run) and Addison Russell (fifth home run in his last five games) lowered the stress level. After Rizzo’s double, Heyward hit his long fly for a 5-0 advantage. Freddie Freeman walked with two outs. You look at the end of five innings, you give up just three runs, you don’t feel so bad about it.

LOS ANGELES – Andrew Toles and Rob Segedin homered for the second straight game, and Los Angeles defeated San Francisco before 46,899 at Dodger Stadium. Trevor Cahill allowed a run in the eighth and was relieved by Justin Grimm, who finished up that inning.
