He said the US aims to focus on its “common enemies” with Russia and encouraged continuing talks between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Obama’s meeting with Putin comes as the Russian Federation leader is playing a prominent role in the presidential campaign at home.

The official told the Associated Press that the two sides clarified some of the large gaps in how a deal would be implemented and directed their respective teams to schedule a meeting for some time later this week.

The U.S. backs some of the rebel groups against Assad, considering them relative moderates.

Instead of the usual photo and statements in a featureless meeting room, May was put, if not on a pedestal, then on a stage with a podium and all the trappings of state, side-by-side with Obama.

Obama also said that the United States and Russian Federation have “deep differences” regarding the sides they support in Syrian and the different approach to bring peace to the country.

He highlighted the need to provide humanitarian relief to those in Syria, and said the nations are working on a instituting a “meaningful, serious, viable cessation of hostilities” there. “I am the president of a sovereign country and I am not answerable to anyone except the Filipino people”, Duterte scoffed in a speech Monday.

China and the United States ratified the Paris agreement on cutting climate warming emissions on the eve of the G-20 summit, setting the stage for other countries to follow suit.

By the end of Obama’s three days in Hangzhou, he would have to contend with yet more inconclusive talks on Syria, prickly Turkish allies, a mouthy Filipino ally and attention-seeking North Koreans firing off a battery of ballistic missiles.

The White House has said it could still win congressional approval of the trade pact before Obama leaves office, and warned that failing to do so would undermine USA leadership in the region and allow China to increasingly set the terms of world trade. There is a Minsk agreement that arose out of the Normandy negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany.

To the frustration of the White House, these weighty matters seemed to be overshadowed by a made-for-social-media moment from Obama’s arrival at the airport.

As the president was greeted by his Chinese hosts, Obama’s aides and accompanying journalists clashed with a Chinese official as they tried to watch the ceremony. His next stop is Laos, where he’ll promote his effort to deepen ties to Southeast Asia.

The summit also stressed the importance of connecting developing countries and small and medium-sized enterprises to the existing and new global and regional trade associations, she noted.

At the start of his trip, a logistical spat over missing airline airplane stairs needed for Obama to reach the red carpet at Hangzhou airport and verbal altercations between U.S. and Chinese officials grabbed headlines.
