“But given the gaps of trust that exist, that is a tough negotiation and we haven’t yet closed the gaps in a way where we think it would actually work”.

Hangzhou (China), Sep 5: The 11th G20 Summit ended here on Monday, reaching extensive consensus on pursuing innovative, invigorated, interconnected and inclusive world economic growth.

“We could, at least for a period of time, agree on mutual and active efforts to recover the situation in Syria”, the president said, stressing that any moves should be taken in consultation with the Syrian government. Al-Assad’s forces, and in the past Russian planes, have bombed us -backed Syrian rebels under the guise of fighting ISIS.

“In their discussion president Putin and President Obama clarified the remaining gaps in those discussions and they directed Secretary Kerry and foreign Minister Lavrov to see if they could reach an agreement”.

Any deal would depend on Moscow using its influence with Syrian President Bashar Assad to persuade the Syrian leader to ground planes and stop the assault on opposition forces. The presidents talked “ways in which we can institute a meaningful, serious, verifiable cessation of hostilities in Syria and our capacity to provide some humanitarian relief” to the Syrian people, Obama told the media.

Xi said that the G20, which include the United States, Russia, India, Japan and major European Union countries, should use multiple policy tools including fiscal, monetary and structural reform to ward off short term risk and explore medium- and long-term growth potential. Obama met earlier with French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the same issue.

The visit opened on a high note, with the United States and China consummating their unlikely partnership on climate change by announcing they were both entering the global emissions-cutting deal reached previous year in Paris.

President Obama met with his Russian counterpart on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in China, negotiating over a proposal to cooperate in the war in Syria. This, after Duterte warned Obama not to question him about extrajudicial killings in his country. “Typically the tone of our meetings is candid, blunt, businesslike”.
