Talking about the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit that begins on Thursday, Putin said the Summit has evolved into a platform for its members to carry out cooperation in multiple areas.

“We hope that under these new circumstances, positive relations with our two countries will prevail”, Peskov said.

Both Putin and Xi pledged ever-closer cooperation, with the Russian president saying Russia and China “stick to points of view which are very close to each other or are nearly the same in the global arena”.

Analysts here have noticed that “China-Russian ties at an unprecedented level” has become a catchphrase of both sides in recent years.

Chinese President Xi Jinping during a meeting with the Russian leader Vladimir Putin noted that the strategic partnership between Russia and China contributes to the healthy development of regional and global politics.

In May 2014, Putin visited Beijing and presided over the signing of numerous deals, including a mammoth 30-year natural gas contract worth $400 billion, seeking to show the West that Russian Federation still had viable options.

In a boost to the Russian leader, the Chinese President denounced western sanctions against Russia. Last December, the Chinese energy company Sinopec also bought a stake in Russia’s largest energy company, Sibur.

For his part, Putin has echoed Xi Jinping’s sentiment, pointing out China-Russian economic cooperation is especially important given a volatile world market.

They also signed a new one-year contract under which Rosneft could supply up to 2.4 million tonnes of crude oil to ChemChina between 1 August, 2016 and 31 July, 2017. “We collaborate on environmental issues, and large-scale energy projects, including in nuclear energy”, Putin told Xinhua.

China and Russian Federation share common interests in maintaining regional security and economic development. Works on the Force of Siberia gas pipeline are on schedule and it’s expected to reach full capacity in 2020.

“It will have consequences, both to the European Union, and to Europe in general, and to us”.

Regular interactions between Moscow and Beijing strengthen “good-neighborly” relations and cooperation, Putin said. Despite overtones of peaceful cooperation there is still much mistrust.

“We would like to study this issue most attentively together with our Mongolian friends and the People’s Republic of China”, Putin said during a meeting with leaders of China and Mongolia in Uzbekistan’s capital, Tashkent.

“Russia is open to discuss this crucial issue and has a couple of times shown its readiness for dialogue”, he claimed.”But, just as it happened on the eve of World War II, we do not see a positive reaction in response”.
