Russian President Vladimir Putin, left, shakes hands with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Kremlin, in Moscow, Russia, Thursday, Dec, 24, 2015.
On Wednesday, Modi stated India was planning a $150 billion armed forces development program, while the country’s foreign secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said investments with Russian Federation are set to increase.
Indian officials have said that Putin and Modi would discuss more arms purchases for India and joint manufacturing projects.
Putin conveyed Russia’s “strong support” to India’s bid for permanent membership of the UN Security Council, saying it is a “deserving and strong candidate that can bring an independent and responsible approach” within the world body. Modi said his government’s endeavour would be to ensure “liberal conditions” for Indian investors.
Strengthening a deep and substantial relationship, PM Modi and President Putin also witnessed the signing of multiple agreements between the two countries across sectors.
The two sides are expected to sign a number of pacts to expand cooperation in a number of key areas including defence, nuclear energy, hydrocarbons and trade.
Earlier on Thursday, Modi visited Russia’s National Crisis Management Centre (NCMC), also known as EMERCOM, a multi-level coordination centre created to provide inter-agency coordination and alert people about the threat of emergency situations.
While President Vladimir Putin lauded Russian-India relations, he said the two nations were building a “privileged strategic partnership” in a possible reference to India’s interest in purchasing Russia’s advanced S-400 air defense systems. Modi is on official visit and plans to meet Russian Pres…
Modi will address a gathering of Friends of India and also meet members of the Indian community in Russian Federation.
“President Putin hosts a private tete-a-tete for PM”. It is expected that both countries will seal a number of defence deals as well.
He said expanding economic ties would be a “very big priority” as the two countries were aiming at enhancing annual bilateral trade to $30 billion over the next 10 years from current $10 billion.
They could also announce the location of a new Russian nuclear energy plant in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, an extension of the Russian nuclear plant under construction in Kudankulam where one reactor is already in operation.
Modi also remembered former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the event.
