The United States was informed on a short notice by Russian Federation of its airstrikes carried out from an Iranian air base, US Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James said at a Foreign Press Club briefing.

The Pentagon confirmed on Tuesday the Russian military notified the US-led coalition against the IS before Russian bombers carried out airstrikes in Syria from Iran. Much of that system has been delivered, Iranian officials have said.

The Russian Defense Ministry released a video showing a Russian Tu-22M3 long-range bomber dropping bombs in strikes described as “terrorist objects in Syria”. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

It is virtually unheard in recent history for Iran to allow a foreign power to use one of its bases to stage attacks.

Moscow’s deepening involvement comes as the Syrian regime and Iran-backed ground forces supported by Russian Federation airstrikes are battling to retake the city Aleppo from rebels, including jihadists.

Cordesman assessed that the U.S. would certainly consider steps like raising the issue with the United Nations in an attempt to push back against the emerging Iran-Russian collaboration.

Both sides in the conflict have been accused of using chemical weapons, charges the regime and rebels both deny.

Syrian rebels and opposition activists reacted angrily to the news.

Defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov suggested that Washington needed to brush up on the specifics of the resolution. The move came with little notice to the United States, which has watched helplessly the escalating bloodshed near Aleppo, the country’s biggest city, and even offered an alliance with Russian Federation against Islamic State and other extremist fighters as a way to get Syria’s government out of the fight.

Gerges, the analyst, said the new developments put to rest any hope of coordination between the United States and Russian Federation in Syria. The Obama administration is trying to do some of this regarding military operations against extremist groups in Syria. “Too costly at this particular moment”, he said.

Iranian soldiers from the Revolutionary Guards march during a military parade last month in Tehran. “In the case we are discussing now, there was neither the sale, nor supply, nor transfer of warplanes to Iran”. The distance from Hamedan is less than half that.

Toner told reporters Wednesday that the actual language of the resolution is very nuanced.

The deployment appeared to stem from political and strategic objectives, rather than military needs. “Syrian treaty allowing the bombardment of Syrian territory by drones and planes from the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, or any other foreign air bases”.

Russian Federation on Wednesday denied that its use of an air base in Iran had involved the sale or transfer of combat aircraft thereby violating worldwide sanctions.

It said the military aircraft had taken off from bases in both Russian Federation and Iran and destroyed six command posts and a large number of fighters and military equipment.

The nearest air base to Hamedan is Shahid Nojeh, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of the city. The newspaper’s coverage of the expansion in Iranian-Russian collaboration included reports stating that Russia is still striking civilian populations with incendiary weapons that are banned under worldwide law.

The Tupolev-22M3 bombers, which had conducted strikes on Syria from bases in southern Russia, were too large to be accommodated at Russia’s own air base inside Syria, Russian media reported.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, left, chats with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov upon being welcomed by Lavrov for their meeting in Moscow, Russia, on Monday, August 17, 2015. On Wednesday, Russia’s Defense Ministry said another wave of bombers had departed from Iran, striking targets in eastern Syria.
