The plain, which borders Latakia, has been the focus of a months-long offensive by a rebel alliance including al-Qaida’s Syria affiliate al-Nusra Front.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group, confirmed the advance.

“State Department spokesman John Kirby wouldn’t discuss the reports of errant Russian cruise missiles, but he says Kerry has been talking to Lavrov about Moscow’s targets, most of which, Kirby says, are not against the Islamic State”.
Four cruise missiles fired at Syria from a Russian ship in the Caspian Sea on Wednesday have crashed in Iran, United States officials said on Thursday.
“Unlike CNN, we don’t distribute information citing anonymous sources, but show the very missile launches and the way they hit their targets nearly in real time,”Konashenkov said”.
“To the dismay of our friends in the Pentagon and Langley, our strike yesterday with precision-guided weapons at ISIS infrastructure in Syria hit its targets”, the statement read.
There was no immediate reaction from Tehran.
The BBC’s Barbara Plett Usher in Washington says the Americans are rattled by the addition of cruise missiles to the air war over Syria, where the U.S. and its allies are also operating.
“This is particularly relevant in the view of the recent violations of NATO’s airspace by Russian aircraft…”
A Syrian military source said government troops had begun a broad ground operation on Wednesday near the village of Latmeen in Hama province, aided by Russian air cover. He said new fighting units, including one called the Fourth Assault Corps, had been set up to wage the campaign and the army now held the military initiative.
“Foreign military intervention in Syria – whether by Russian Federation or the West – will neither help resolve the conflict there nor eradicate terrorist organizations”, Ahmed bin Heli, deputy secretary-general of the Arab League, told reporters.
The ultraconservative militant group Ahar al-Sham, part of the coalition known as the Army of Conquest that controls Idlib, posted video showing it launching Grad rockets at government troops.
