Russian Defense Ministry asks USA to reread United Nations resolution on Iran

On Tuesday, Russian long-range bombers took off from Hamedan air base in Iran to launch strikes against terrorist targets in Syria.

Lavrov was responding to comments by US State Department spokesman Mark Toner, who said on Tuesday that Russian Federation might be violating UN Security Council Resolution 2231 by using Iranian territory to launch air raids in Syria.

Army Col. Chris Garver said Russian Federation notified the US through a deconfliction channel that it planned to fly from Iran through Iraq to strike targets in Syria and then go back.

US officials said Tuesday that they did not know if Russian Federation planned to fly more missions from the base. “There is no reason whatsoever to suspect Russia’s violation of Resolution 2231 because there has been no supply, sale or transfer of military aircraft to Iran from Russian Federation”.

It said its Iranian-based bombers had been escorted by fighter jets based at Russia’s Hmeymim air base in Syria’s Latakia Province.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said there was no motive to suggest Russian Federation had violated resolution 2,231 of the United Nations Security Council.

“Our cooperating with Russia on regional issues such as Syria does not mean that we have given a military base to Russia”, Larijani remarked.

The text prohibits the use of combat aircraft “for the use in or benefit of Iran”.

“In the case we’re discussing there has been no supply, sale, or transfer of fighter jets to Iran”, Lavrov said. “It speaks to a continuation of a pattern we’ve seen of Russian Federation continuing to carry out airstrikes, now with Iran’s direct assistance. that predominantly target moderate Syrian opposition forces”.

Later in the day, the State Department said Washington will examine if the use of the Iranian airbase violates United Nations resolutions.

Russian Federation on Monday said it and the United States were close to joining forces in some form around Aleppo, but U.S. officials have not confirmed this.

“We continue to pursue that”, he said.

The Russian ministry statement said the Su-34 and Tu-22M3 bombers targeted the Islamic State group and militants of the al-Qaida-linked group formerly known as the Nusra Front in Aleppo, as well as in Deir el-Zour and Idlib, destroying five major ammunition depots, training camps and three command posts.

When an Anadolu Agency reporter asked Toner during the briefing what the US position was over the kidnapped head of the Syrian Kurdish National Council (KNC), Ibrahim Biro, the spokesman said he was aware of the reports but had no details on it. Biro was kidnapped last week by the terrorist PKK’s Syrian affiliate Kurdish Democratic Union (PYD) forces and was forced to leave Syria.
