The Russian government has been accused of trying to interfere in the upcoming US elections, and a letter from Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid seen by the New York Times asks the FBI to investigate possible links to Donald Trump’s campaign.
The hacked emails, released by activist group WikiLeaks in July, appeared to show favoritism within the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and prompted the resignation of the body’s chairwoman.
In the interview with Bloomberg, the Russian leader also said the two leading presidential candidates are using “shock tactics” in their election campaigns.
The Bloomberg report noted that Putin, who has won praise and a pledge to improve ties from Trump while facing attacks from Clinton, stuck repeatedly to his position that he has no preferred candidate and would work with whoever wins. “If our partners actually agree with a different logic – the logic of consideration of mutual interests, respect for the interests of each other, then our relations will change drastically”, Putin said.
“That’s why we never intervened, don’t intervene and try not to intervene in domestic political processes” in the U.S.
Earlier, U.S. President Barack Obama had said that he would discuss the hacking with Putin.
The FBI has said it believes with a “high degree of certainty” that hackers who broke into the DNC’s research database and files containing thousands of emails from Democratic Party activists were linked to Russian intelligence services. It’s an extremely hard thing to check, it’s impossible to check.
Putin seemed to be congratulating the hackers for the transparency that they created by opening private DNC information to the American public and the rest of the civilized world. “I’m not sure that even our Foreign Ministry experts are sensitive enough”. “We definitely don’t do such things at a state level”. “We have a flawless track record”, Assange said in July.
