At the 2012 London Paralympics, athletes competed in venues full of spectators who cheered from the first event to the last.

When the Brazilian team came out in flower-patterned jackets, led by a storming contingent of athletes in wheelchairs, the legendary football stadium roared in delirium.

Kenya’s Samwel Kimani kicked off day one of the Rio Paralympics by winning the first gold medal of the Games. “We are all part of one world”. “Paralympic sport and athletes are incredibly inspiring and we are honored to showcase their athletic excellence”.

“Now let’s crack on with the Games and show the world what we can do”.

“Over the next 12 days, through the performances of paralympians, you will see the true meaning of sport and the true definition of ability”.

“Today we have a hero”.

“You see obstacles as opportunities, you fight for your rights and here in Rio you have a unique opportunity to make for a more equitable world”, he added.

Silva received the torch after a number of athletes carried it in the stadium.

Seu Jorge, who was in charge of wrapping up the ceremony, was accompanied by musicians Circle Samba and made the Maracana audience move their bodies.
