Russian Federation stages own ‘Paralympic Games’ despite ban

IPC communications director Craig Spence claimed today that $230,000 (£174,000/€205,000) has now been accumulated, $70,000 (£53,000/€62,000) short of the overall target which it is hoped will bring 10,000 children to the Games.

While Paralympic athletes from other countries gather in the Brazilian city, their Russian counterparts will compete in Moscow.

“I feel very sorry that you are unable to take part in this holiday of sports (in Rio), but we will imply maximum of our efforts to return to the global Paralympic family as soon as possible”, Mutko added.

However, there have been suggestions that the no-show has to do with divisions over the Paralympic committee’s outright ban on Russian athletes after allegations of a state-sanctioned doping program and the IOC’s relatively softer line.

Canada has 162 athletes competing in 19 sports in Rio, and is gunning for a top-16 finish in the overall medals standings.

Apart from that blemish, though, the opening ceremony was one to savour, even if the Brazil president Michel Temer was roundly booed by the audience at the stadium, three-quarters full, despite concerns about interest in the Paralympics.
