Russian Federation tops Finland to advance to World Cup semis

Team USA’s 4-3 loss to the Czech Republic in its final World Cup game put a frame around the Americans’ most disappointing tournament performance since the 1998 Olympics, when an unexpected early exit led to players trashing rooms in the Olympic Village. He’s proud of his global success and wants to end it with a World Cup of Hockey championship.

Russia’s lack of defensive depth will be their undoing against Canada; the Canadian offence is too well-balanced and aggressive for the sub-par Russian blueline corps. “What the National Hockey League and the NHLPA decide to do with this is completely out of my hands, I love the project and I’d enjoy doing it again in four years, it would go well with my other job”, said Krueger. “That’s a good feeling”. Russian Federation hasn’t scored on the power play in three tournament games, but I wouldn’t want to test the limits on that given the talent on those units. Guys were trying to make plays.

“You’re playing for Canada and the expectation is to win, from the outside and inside”, said defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. Ten years after leading the Swedes to gold at the 2006 Olympics, “the King” has one last crack at another global title.

There was that intermission between regulation and overtime of the gold-medal game at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, of course.

“Just going to take some time here”, he said.

You would think Laine is going to get over his timidity, or Malkin will go on a tear, any moment.

“We played against [Canada] in the preseason game and obviously it was a huge game mentally for us”, Ovechkin said.

This tournament didn’t start out strong for the Russians, falling to Sweden in their first game of the round robin, and only narrowly eking out a win against the young Team America.

Canada swept Sweden in the best-of-three final to claim the title.

The Europeans’ 3-0 win over the U.S.in the opener for both teams stunned everyone in the hockey world and jumpstarted its run to the semifinals. The host side has a 7-3-2 edge in the all-time series. That didn’t stop the fighting and the two teams were ejected from the tournament. “It’s going to be tough, it’s going to be hard because we’re going to play here in Canada”.

“It’s going to be a fun game”, downplayed Ovechkin.

Veteran Russian forward Pavel Datsyuk missed the final preliminary round game due to a minor injury. He will be re-evaluated Saturday.

There are several reasons why the reigning Olympic and World Cup champions are favored to win again. They seemed to find their groove eventually, and looked solid in their last game against Finland, with Vladimir Tarasenko, Ivan Telegin and Evgeni Malkin all getting on the board for their team.

Rask finished with 19 saves for Finland (0-3-0), which is a back-to-back Olympic bronze medalist.

This may be the best Team Canada ever. Bobrovsky stopped 45 of 48 shots but gave up the overtime victor to Ryan Getzlaf. It’s nice to have that; it’s good to have that experience with guys and the belief you can play different kind of games and overcome things. But we have to assume the negotiations won’t go that far, will they?

We all know that anything can happen in sports; Tyson was eventually knocked out by Buster Douglas, David beat Goliath and Team U.S.A believed in miracles and beat the U.S.S.R in 1980.

Hockey action continues Sunday, when Team Europe faces Sweden in the other semi-final at 1 p.m.

“We still have work to do”, Markov said.

I have heard a lot of remarks about Patrick Kane and how he never really gets going in worldwide tournaments.

Team USA was an absolute disaster at the World Cup of Hockey
