Russian swimmers appeal Olympic ban

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) – Brazil’s highest officials celebrated the completion of a much-delayed $3 billion subway expansion that will play a crucial part in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday just days before the games are set to kick off.

Four other swimmers banned at the same time, who have previously served doping suspensions, have not yet appealed.

Russia’s sports minister, Vitaly Mutko, has promised there will also be an appeal to CAS against the blanket ban of the country’s weightlifting team.

There was good news for Russia on Friday when the Russian Taekwondo Union said it had received notification from the World Taekwondo Federation that all three of its entries could compete in Rio.

The new test – developed in Australia to identify if an athlete is artificially adjusting their DNA to enhance performance – is not yet in use at a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratory, Dr Richard Budgett told The Associated Press.

An IOC program commission report released on Friday said the five sports are a blend of the traditional and emerging, youth-focused events, and all have worldwide and local appeal.

Despite the bans, the Russian Olympic team could still number more than 260 athletes. “Every athletes’ village in the Olympic Games should be non-smoking so we’ve asked for that to be enforced because at the moment it’s not”.
