In the aftermath of that report, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) resisted huge pressure to impose a blanket ban on Russian Federation from the Olympics which get underway on August 5. An existing betting monitoring system has also been reinforced.

“They didn’t let us into the main competition, the Olympics, so we came here to show what we can do”, said the shot put victor, Konstantin Lyadusov. The program will be supported by Brazil’s Department of Federal Police, the national secretariat for security at major events, and Interpol. We say that not so much out of concern for the results of the Games themselves, which are bound to provide the usual portion of thrills, chills – and accusations of various transgressions by participants and officials.

Efimova’s agent has said he is preparing an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and the Russian Canoe Federation’s general secretary Irina Sirayeva said that the five banned athletes could follow suit.

Weightlifting is the latest Olympic sport to be subjected to a Russian ban.

Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva – who recently started a public campaign in order to have her ban from the Olympics lifted but was later denied – addressed the crowd before the meet.

Paes angered many in Brazil and overseas when he appeared to downplay Australia’s complaints over conditions in the Olympic Village on Sunday by saying he might install a kangaroo on the premises to make them feel more at home. She does not plan on doing so.

World Rowing, meanwhile, has barred 19 Russians, most for insuffient tests.

On Monday, swimming’s world governing body FINA ruled out seven Russians including reigning world 100m breaststroke champion Yulia Efimova.

Tests conducted by the Russian anti-doping agency, which is suspended following repeated allegations of cover-ups, are not considered valid for Olympic purposes. “They’re training and they’re ready to go”.

IOC President Thomas Bach countered that collective responsibility had to be balanced against the rights of clean athletes.

The other bidders for 2024 are Budapest, Hungary; Los Angeles; and Rome.

In fact, non-Olympic sponsors can’t even re-tweet or share social media messages from athletes during the blackout period, again at risk of getting the athlete into hot water with the powers that see.

Tellingly, 31 of the 98 positives confirmed so far in the retests of samples taken at the 2008 or 2012 Olympics have been by weightlifters.

The ICF also said that Russian Federation would not be allowed to enter boats in four events in which the excluded athletes would have raced.

Despite the recent doping scandal surrounding Russia’s Olympians, which will keep several of its athletes out of the Summer Games, it was announced Friday that reigning Olympic bronze-medalist Anastasia Baryshnikova and the rest of the Russian taekwondo team have been approved to compete in Rio.

The report of the independent commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) chaired by Canadian sports law professor Richard McLaren, is being scrutinised by the Russian Investigative Committee (IC), Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said on Friday.

Weightlifting became the second sport after track and field to issue blanket bans on Russian athletes. “They’re not letting [our athletes] compete for political reasons”. That won’t happen prior to the Games, and so he said that the test will be applied to post-Rio retests.

The International Weightlifting Federation has banned Russian competitors from taking part in the Rio Olympics.
