The Hoosiers (4-3, 0-3) rallied from a 27-24 halftime deficit with four consecutive touchdowns in a 10-minute span to start the second half before the Scarlet Knights produced their own scoring outburst. The Scarlet Knights were down 17-13 in the second quarter after Laviano connected with Carroo on a 58-yard touchdown pass with 12:50 left and the Hoosiers pushed the lead back to 11 on Sudfeld’s 6-yard pass to Fuchs.
Federico’s ensuing extra point was blocked – his second PAT that was blocked in the game – and the game remained deadlocked at 52-apiece.
If the Indiana gunslinger mans the offense, Rutgers will need all of the help it can get in a secondary fighting through injuries and inexperience. Running back Robert Martin and wideout Carlton Agudosi made a few key plays on Rutgers’ trudge down to Indy’s nine.
Numbers of Note: 14, the number of quarters Indiana had gone without turning the ball over until an interception against Penn State last Saturday.
The Hoosiers lose their third straight game and fall to 4-3 (0-3) on the season. He also ran for a touchdown and moved into a tie for second on the school’s career list for touchdown passes (45). Three Indiana receivers topped 100 yards – junior Mitchell Paige (eight receptions, 126 yards), junior Ricky Jones (six for 119, one touchdown) and sophomore Simmie Cobbs (seven for 107).The teams combined for 1,223 yards, including 627 by the Hoosiers.
Yet on a day Indiana (4-2, 0-3) was in prime position to move within one win of becoming bowl eligible, they couldn’t close it out. On Tuesday, HC Wilson said “we’ll see how it goes” when asked about the status of his two best offensive players leading up to Saturday’s match-up with Rutgers. “We’ve just got to bring it all together and lock arms and really ride the season out”. Running back Devine Redding, still spelling the injured Jordan Howard, rushed 66 yards for a touchdown to give the Hoosiers 52 points and a 25-point lead with five and a half minutes to play in the third.
