Ruthless Borussia Dortmund put Tottenham to the sword

Hugo Lloris had to admit it did not feel as if Tottenham Hotspur belonged among the elite of European football after the chastening defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.

Aubameyang scored his 33rd goal in 38 games this season as Borussia Dortmund took a commanding 3-0 lead over Spurs in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday, and claimed he would never seek a move to White Hart Lane.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a goal disallowed before he gave the home side a first-half lead. “That is why we lost the game”, said Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.

“Such things happen in football, and they were the better team, but disappointed because we didn’t play the way we normally do”.

“I can imagine a lot of clubs see his performance, his talent and his personality and imagine Auba plays for them”.

The match in Dortmund promised to be an exciting fixture featuring the second-place sides in the Bundesliga and the Premier League. I think that Dortmund have a very good team and it’s a very good challenge for us.

Ilkay Gundogan, whose agent was pictured this week meeting Manchester City sporting director Txiki Begiristain, did not play, with Dortmund insisting the midfielder had a problem with his foot.

The defeat leaves Spurs winless in three matches after the defeat at West Ham and draw with Arsenal, and alarm bells will start ringing if they fail to beat Premier League basement club Villa.

“Against Aston Villa? They play at home, they’re last in the table and they will come to fight”. “We’ve noticed their ball recovery is very good and we found that their speed increases this season”.

“I don’t know why it didn’t work out”.

Aubameyang has now reached 32 goals from 37 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions this season. “In the second period we were completely dominant; we pressed Tottenham back into their own half and kept them at a distance from our goal”. “It’s important to recover well for all the players who were on the pitch today, and we will all be ready for the game on Sunday which is maybe the most important”.
