Ryan Coogler Linked To Black Panther Director’s Chair

Marvel is still searching for a director for Black Panther, having seen first choice Ava DuVernay pass on the project, and F. Gary Gray rule himself out by accepting the Furious 8 gig. Now, it seems like Marvel has zeroed in on their latest candidate: Creed and Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler.

Although the director hasn’t joined official talks with the studio over the posting, sources did tell the site Marvel is actively pursuing him.

“Selma” helmer Ava DuVernay was once attached to direct, but she passed on the project due to creative differences.

Last week, we reported that Joe Robert Cole (American Crime Story) is nearing a deal to write the screenplay, so it may be quite a few time before a script is turned in, especially since it isn’t known if his deal has been finalized yet. But what do you guys think of the potential choice – is Coogler the person to bring Black Panther to life? According to him, Marvel plans to introduce the character in one of the live-action series already planned for Netflix (i.e., Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and/or The Defenders) before spinning him off into his own show.

As we said at the top of this post, take all of these details with many large heaping tablespoons of salt. Would you want Coogler to direct Black Panther?
