Ryan Coogler Rumored to Direct Black Panther
Finding a director for Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther film has been a contentious ordeal, with rumored talent dropping from the position like flies. Another report from August revealed that Straight Outta Compton filmmaker F. Gary Gray was a directorial candidate, but he ended up taking the reins on Universal’s Fast & Furious 8. However, according to Heroic Hollywood, the studio has now identified a Plan C in the form of Creed director Ryan Coogler.

Coogler first picked up some profile from Fruitvale Station, which debuted a Sundance a few years ago (Matt reviewed it for us at the time and appears to have liked it).
So far, there’s no confirmation of how far talks have progressed, or if any offers have been made, so take this all with a grain of salt. Marvel hasn’t confirmed or denied this report as of yet, but it makes sense that they would try to find a director soon, since their release date was pushed up.
At present, the production has a screenwriter in Joe Robert Cole and a star in Chadwick Boseman, so filling the director’s chair is very much the next priority on Marvel’s list.
