Ryan Fitzpatrick: Fitzpatrick nets 272 yards in win over Jags

The visitors responded just before the break when Allen Hurns raided in behind the coverage of Buster Skrine to collect a deep pass from Blake Bortles to notch a touchdown, bringing his side within four points.

Next up for the New York Jets is an AFC East showdown with the Buffalo Bills in a short Week 10.

“We just didn’t finish it”, coach Gus Bradley said. “You look back on it, a lot of these were self-inflicted, the turnovers and the penalties at inopportune times”. They won, but this could have come back to bite the Jets. After the Jets went three-and-out on their ensuing possession, tight end Kellen Davis recovered a muffed punt by Nick Marshall, which set up a 20-yard touchdown pass from Fitzpatrick to receiver Brandon Marshall three plays later. He was injured during pregame warmups and replaced on kickoffs and field goals by punter Ryan Quigley, who made all four of his extra-point attempts. I should have picked that ball off in the end zone. But after a two-game skid, it’s a win they’ll gladly take.

By improving to 5-3, the Jets remain in the thick of the wildcard conversation and having a quarterback like Fitzpatrick has been a steadying influence on a roster that includes many powerful weapons in the skilled positions. While the win was a badly needed one, it definitely wasn’t pretty.

The Jaguars used two timeouts during the subsequent three-and-out, took over at the 50-yard-line following a punt and scored two plays later, when quarterback Blake Bortles threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Allen Hurns. He came down with a nice back shoulder catch against Aaron Colvin in the first quarter before finishing the drive with an easy seven-yard touchdown. The defense did come to play, however, and the Jets hung on to win by the score of 28-23. Bortles fumbled and threw a pick in the final 6 minutes of a 28-23 loss to the Jets, which contributed significantly to Jacksonville’s 13th consecutive road loss. Through the first five games of the season, Ivory was phenomenal at that task, battering opposing fronts. We might find out Thursday.

Williams, who had an important interception in the second quarter, got his second interception of the game with 24 seconds left to ice the game.

Literally, he had no clue that he was going to be part of a sandwich on that play. And because the Jets don’t play again until November 22 in Houston, there’s a possibility Fitzpatrick will be back by then. Having that said, the health status of Chris Ivory and the decline in defensive play has to be a concern heading into the second half of the 2015 National Football League season. Cromartie also gave up a 49-yard touchdown pass to Oakland Raiders WR Andre Holmes in last week’s loss.

Head coach Todd Bowles went over his injury report, which is submitted on Monday for Thursday night participants. Cromartie fared better as a kick returner Sunday, when he averaged 32.7 yards on three returns with a long return of 54 yards.
