Ryan Lochte: I ‘left details out’ of robbery story

“That’s why I’m taking full responsibility for it, is because I overexaggerated that story and if I had never done that, we wouldn’t be in this mess”, said Lochte in an interview broadcast in part late Saturday, the peroxide color washed out of his hair. Gunnar Bentz, the youngest of the four United States swimmers accused of making up a false story about an armed robbery at the Rio Olympics, released a statement on Friday detailing the events in question.

Lochte has repeatedly changed his story about an altercation at a gas station in Rio de Janeiro last Sunday. But he said the athletes wanted to leave, so they paid 100 Brazilian reals (about United States $33) and $20 in USA currency and left.

Asked how he felt being home while his teammates were detained, Lochte said: “I let my team down”. Then the second guard drew his weapon and both guards pointed their guns at us and yelled at us to sit on a nearby sidewalk.

Lochte, who left for the U.S. the day after the incident, has also apologised.

The fourth member of the group, Jimmy Feigen, was set to leave the country on Friday night after agreeing with a judge to donate $11,000 to a sporting charity, a condition of police returning his passport.

Of course, we later learned that Lochte and Co. hadn’t been so much “robbed at gunpoint” as they had been forced to pay for a sign that Lochte had vandalized.

Lochte’s future swimming career is now in the hands of Olympic officials, who he hopes will be able to forgive him for the events of the past week. “I think the four swimmers are well aware of that now”.

On Thursday, the USOC apologized “to our hosts in Rio and the people of Brazil” for the swimmers’ unacceptable behaviour and said it would assess any potential consequences for them.

The three other swimmers in the vehicle tried to leave as quickly as possible because they feared Lochte would cause more damage, according to the revised testimony.
