Michael Phelps wasn’t about to be stopped.

“It could be for 10 days, two years”.

During the finals of the 200m individual medley, CBC commentator Elliotte Friedman confused Ryan Lochte for Michael Phelps.

Joseph Schooling pulled off a stunning upset at the Rio Olympics by beating Michael Phelps in the 100m butterfly to win Singapore’s first ever gold medal.

The record: the most all-time individual Olympic titles – a mark previously held by Leonidas of Rhodes.

“But Ryan Lochte is going for it and Phelps doesn’t look like he has this one in him”.

Ledecky and Franklin will also be looking to win medals in races where they own world records.

Then the most decorated Olympian of all time went on the victory walk with his fellow swimmers – before he had to get ready for his next race, a qualifying heat in the 100-meter butterfly.

“It’s been a hell of a career”, Phelps told reporters, while acknowledging the strain on his 31-year-old body.

The American also has two silver medals and two bronze medals. That’s four more medals than I’ve won!

During his “Today” show appearance Lochte never said Phelps will be swimming in Tokyo, just that “he will be there”.

Some 23 seconds after Ledecky touched the wall, the last of the eight finalists finally got to the end of the grueling race.

Oleksiak is the first athlete born after January 1 2000 to claim an Olympic gold medal in an individual event.

Sjostrom took the bronze at 52.99 with Bronte Campbell fourth at 53.04.

At last year’s SEA Games on home soil in June, he successfully defended his crown by splashing his way to gold in 52.13sec. However, he didn’t rule out making a run at the 2020 Games. He had to return to the pool roughly 30 minutes later for the semifinals of the 100 butterfly, the other event where he was the three-time defending champion. “That was a real breakthrough for me to be able to win that one”. I thought, “Wow, I only have to put a racing suit on two more times after tonight and I only have to warm down one more time after tonight”.

“The hundred back was a real confidence booster”. You feel good in training but that doesn’t always mean your races are going to be good. He brings the best out of me. “It turned out that way”.
